E-scooters are now officially legal on Vancouver streets

If you thought it took a while for Vancouver to get car-sharing options, then the latest news about e-scooters in Vancouver is sure to make you chuckle. Last week, Vancouver City Council approved a pilot program that allows electric scooters, and electric scooters alone, to zip around the city. Here’s the scoot (hehe).

Back in April, the province announced it wanted to run a pilot project of e-scooters in 6 municipalities around the province (including Vancouver). Well, it took some time to figure out, but Vancouver’s city council gave that the go-ahead last Thursday.

Interestingly, the pilot project only allows electric scooters, so hoverboards and other personal transport tech are still technically illegal. What’s more, the pilot project will not allow e-scooter sharing companies, such as Bird or Lime, to operate either. Basically, you’ve got to actually own one of these things if you want to take advantage of it.

The pilot project comes into effect immediately, and will run until April, 2024. But, there will be a review next spring, and hopefully, we’ll see some e-scooter sharing take place then. In the meanwhile, we guess ask around and see if any of your friends have an extra one.
