Pop some corn and your trunk or roll out a picnic blanket! Summer 2023 is just around the corner and so are hotter days, longer nights and countless activities that will get you out and about. One of our favourites? Like so many others who live in Calgary, we love a drive-in movie or a grassy flick!

While there certainly aren’t as many in and around the city as there were during the height of the pandemic, Calgary still has a number of spots where you can enjoy a movie under the stars.

If of course, you’re not sure where to go this year, here are just a few that are expected to reopen for the sunny season with a selection of old favourites and family-friendly classics.

DRIVE-INS

HIGH RIVER SUNSET DRIVE-IN

Up for a bit of a drive? Though they have yet to announce an official kick-off date, the High River Sunset Drive-In has delighted movie fans every summer year after year. Previous films include World War Z, Scream and 13 Going on 30.

BIG ART DRIVE-IN

They’re coming back, Calgary! According to their website, The Big Art Drive-In will return in 2023. Though they have yet to release this year’s showtimes, Calgarians can expect a full list of family-friendly features and pride programming shown on a massive 40-foot screen.

OUTDOOR MOVIE EVENTS

NANTON GRAIN ELEVATOR

Ready for a unique and memorable experience? The Nanton Grain Elevator often shows crowd-pleasing films including Rocky Horror Picture Show, which will take to the screen this July.

SUNALTA MOVIE IN THE PARK

Brought to life by the Sunalta and Scarboro Community Associations, Movie In The Park is a joy year after year. Not only is this event a ton of fun (no matter what they’re showing) it’s also FREE to attend so keep checking back for more info!
