If you happen to be a commuter living south of the city, this might just be of interest to you. The City of Des Moines has announced a two-month pilot project to test the viability of a passenger-only fast ferry between the Des Moines Marina and Downtown Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina. Here’s what to expect and when you can ride it.
Ferry service is scheduled to start Wednesday, August 10th, and run until Sunday, October 9th aboard the Chilkat Express. The ferry is chartered from and run by Puget Sound Express. To begin, the boat will make four trips a day, Wednesday through Sunday with a transit time of 40 minutes each way.

When it comes to departure times, the boat will depart Des Moines Marina at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Southbound trips will depart Seattle at 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, and 5 pm. The boat will overnight in Des Moines.
If you’re curious about the service you can actually try it out for free, the first week August 10th-15th, riders can enjoy it for free. Subsequently, the fare will be $10 each way. Seniors and active military will pay $5 each way and children 13 and under ride free. It’s also worth noting that the Chilkat Express is wheelchair accessible as are the docks at both terminals.
