Time to fall back: Daylight saving ends in BC this week

To say that most of us dread adjusting our clocks and ‘falling back’ every year would be putting it mildly – but at least it means we get an extra hour of sleep, right? Love it or hate it, daylight saving time ends in BC on the first Sunday in November, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which means this year, British Columbians will ‘fall back’ on Sunday, November 5th at 2 a.m.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends setting your clocks back by one hour on Saturday night, which means sunrise will occur one hour earlier starting November 5th.

In BC, this means that sunset will now take place around 4:55 p.m., based on the current sunset time.

Move to permanent daylight saving time

Back in 2019, a record number of British Columbians responded in favour of moving to permanent daylight saving time – which would do away with the practice of ‘springing forward’ and ‘falling back’ every year.

As of now, BC plans to move to permanent daylight saving time (DST) once the U.S. passes its own bill.

While the Sunshine Protection Act was approved by the Senate in March of 2022, it still needs to be approved by the House of Representatives and the President before becoming law.

Although there’s no progress in 2023 to note, there are a handful of areas in BC that have already scrapped Daylight Saving Time entirely, including Chetwynd, Creston, Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, and Fort St. John.

So there you have it, BC. Although few are fans of early sunsets, we’ll at least have more sunlight in the mornings!
