While the C of Red may have dried up for the season, there’s plenty to celebrate here in Calgary because this week, Flames boss man Darryl Sutter won the Jack Adams award for NHL coach of the year.
Considered one of the league’s top honors, the Jack Adams award is “given to the coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success in the regular season,” according to the National Hockey League.

Under Sutter (who took over mid-season in March of 2021) the team has gone on to break records and impress opposing teams, fans, and the NHL Broadcasters’ Association- so much so in fact, that the coach won 54 of the 121 first-place votes.
“I am honored to be informed by you of this award,” said Sutter in his award acceptance video in which his brother Brian – a fellow JA award recipient presented broke the news.
“Brian won the award in 1991, so that’s a long time ago and I think back to when he won it and the great job he did, especially being a young NHL head coach and the pressures that we face. So I’m honored to be told by Brian,” he continued.
“I accept the Jack Adams Award on behalf of my family, my wife, Wanda, and son, Christopher.”
