Daylight saving time doesn’t exist in this B.C. mountain town

With daylight saving time coming to an end in a month, it’s tempting to hole ourselves up at home and wait out the colder, darker days ahead. However, there are a handful of communities in B.C. that have already chosen to scrap the practice of “falling back” and “springing forward” altogether — and this includes the laid-back mountain town of Creston!

According to Tourism Creston Valley, the small town is a hidden gem of the Kootenays, where time slows down and visitors are invited to savour every moment.

Whether it’s on one of the valley’s picturesque mountaintop trails, old-growth lined boardwalks, or one of Creston’s world-class ski hills, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your visit in the coming months.

Permanent daylight saving time

Like their eastern neighbours in Alberta, Creston is on Mountain Time, but the town has opted out of observing daylight saving time. This means that Creston keeps a consistent time throughout the year, syncing with the Pacific Time Zone during the summer and staying aligned with Mountain Time in the fall.

Winter adventures

What’s more, Creston perfectly balances its mild winter weather and numerous big-mountain backcountry adventures.

In addition to the beautiful Stagleap Provincial Park, visitors can soon check out an extensive ski and snowshoeing trail network at the Creston Snowmobile Club, or head to the nearby Whitewater or North Star Ski Hills.

The provincial park is also home to one of Canada’s highest paved highway passes, which is open year-round for those wanting a scenic drive through the area!

No matter if you choose to ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile, you’re guaranteed scenic views of the Purcell and Selkirk mountains.

Those who prefer an indoor escape can check out one of Creston’s many local wineries, restaurants, or microbreweries.
