Ahhh, yes. There’s a chill in the air, the leaves are falling and it all points to one thing – an autumn road trip. “Follow 44” is a driving route along County Road 44 in Ontario, and this time of year it certainly does not disappoint.
The route winds past a flowing river, forests, trails and it’s all decorated in the changing colours of fall.
The driving route starts just a few minutes south of Ottawa, Ontario.
From there you will follow County Road 44 from Rideau River Provincial Park, through downtown Kemptville, past several country attractions, and finally into Spencerville.
While it sounds like a lot the whole route is only around 27 km, meaning you’ll have lots of time to make stops along the way.
One of the first stops you’ll want to make is Rideau River Provincial Park. The park has a scenic Shoreline Trail that spans a quick 1.5 km with wildlife views along the riverbank.
Continuing the outdoor adventure, Ferguson Forest Centre is next. This large public forest on the Kemptville Creek includes Forest trails, a kayak launch, a 7.5-acre forested dog park, 18-hole disc golf, an arboretum and groomed trails.
Next up, downtown Kemptville for shopping and a stop at the local bakery, the Crusty Baker.
If you’re traveling during October be sure to stop at the Kemptville Farmers’ Market before it closes for the season!
Green Gables Vines is along the way too, a perfect place to rest and enjoy a glass of wine (as long as you’re not the one driving, that is).
As you approach Spencerville make a quick visit to The Spencerville Mill.
This old mill adapted from a flour and grist mill “serving the community’s needs to a feed mill serving local farmers and feed stores”.
Finally, end your road trip by exploring Spencerville’s downtown.
Sounds like County Road 44 is calling, Ontario!
