Calgary is getting a colourful new installation that supports local indigenous artists & here’s when it opens

September is here but this month carries far more weight than that of a heavier coat. Come the 30th, Canadians will be encouraged to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an occasion meant to honour the many Indigenous community members who were forced to enrol in the Canadian residential school system.

This year, in addition to wearing orange, educating yourselves, raising awareness and shopping local businesses (among so many other things), those looking to show their support can also visit ‘Colouring It Forward’ which will be held at Southcentre Mall in the weeks leading up to the second annual day of observation.

Showcasing works of eight Indigenous artists, this vibrant display will feature supersized pieces of art – each of which represents a personal experience or interpretation of culture and the ongoing process of reconciliation.

A double-sided ‘activation wall’ will also be on display where visitors are encouraged to read up on more information on the CIF Reconciliation Society and can contribute to the life-sized colouring page.

“Southcentre is honoured to continue our partnership with Colouring It Forward as we aim to inspire reconciliACTION in our community through this unique art exhibit,” said South Centre Mall’s Marketing Manager, Alexandra Velosa in a press release.

“We invite Calgarians to join us in both acknowledging the past and working together towards building a better future where the traditions and culture of Canada’s Indigenous peoples are shared, celebrated and understood.”

It’s just as important as it is beautiful and moving – but it won’t be there forever.
