This charming artisan village with rocky beaches has BC’s first artificial reef

It’s hard to say which small towns and communities in British Columbia have ‘hidden gem’ status, but it’s equally hard not to add the small artisan village of Chemainus at the top of that list.

Situated between the mountains and ocean on the Cowichan Coast, the picturesque community is full of small-town charm, history, local art, and natural wonders. Basically – all the ingredients you need to cook up the ideal weekend adventure!

Home to the world-famous Chemainus Theatre, the village’s local arts scene is as vibrant and thriving as ever. Visitors can check out an array of exciting live theatre shows, explore over 50 giant murals, or simply peruse the quaint downtown, filled with trendy boutiques and art galleries – and a bustling public market with local makers.

In terms of the great outdoors, Chemainus has a ton of aquatic experiences to offer. This includes beachcombing and swimming in the waters of Kin Beach, discovering the lighthouse island during low tide, or strolling down rugged, rocky beaches.

BC’s first artificial reef

Perhaps the most remarkable experience, however, is exploring the sunken Boeing 737 aircraft that’s now become BC’s first artificial reef.

In 2006, a decommissioned plane originally part of the Canadian Airlines fleet was sunk by the ARSBC near Chemainus to provide new habitat opportunities to marine life in the area.

Today, the sunken plane is a thriving reef just outside of the downtown area that visitors can dive to via boat. The reef is best experienced in fall, winter, or early spring by experienced divers, due to its depth.

So there you have it, BC. Consider visiting Chemainus and taking your next weekend getaway to new depths!
