There’s now a new way to check the status of your Canadian passport after applying and it’s all online, according to Service Canada.

The Canadian government has set up the new online Passport Application Status Checker where Canadians who have recently applied for a passport can now check the status of their application at any time of day.

“Providing Canadians with a convenient option to obtain timely information about their passport application is one of several ways we are improving the client experience for passport applicants,” said Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, Karina Gould.

The process is pretty simple. Once you’re on the site, you chose between two options: if you applied in Canada or in the U.S, and the other if you’ve applied outside of Canada and the U.S.

You then click whether you’ve applied in person or by mail and how long ago you applied.

If you applied four business days prior or less, the government site suggests you wait a bit longer to check the status as it may not be in the system yet. However, you can still test your luck and try the online tool as long as you have your file number to use it.

You are then led to the final step which is checking the status by entering your file number, first and last name, and date of birth.

At the moment, the Canadian government’s service delivery standard is 10 days to process in-person passport applications that are submitted at a specialized passport office. For applications received by mail, it takes 20 days.

You can find the online tool here.
