This charming village near Toronto has buildings that date back to the 1700s

Ontario is home to plenty of charming small towns, but every now and then, one stands out. Just a short drive from the city, Unionville is packed with history, character, and small-town magic. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon, especially as we embrace the spring season.

If you’re driving from downtown Toronto, it’ll take you about an hour or so to get to Unionville, considering traffic. But it’s worth the trip.

Next stop: Unionville, Ont.

According to Unionville’s official site, the “historically unique village” was founded in 1794 and still has many original buildings from the 1800s.

“We are proud of our beautiful Main Street, its merchants, and the many family-friendly events we host every year including the Unionville Festival, Old Tyme Christmas, and more,” shares the site.

Strolling along its main street, you’ll be left in awe as the village’s buildings take you back to a simple time. It’s almost peaceful!

Per Destination Ontario, Unionville is also known for its pubs, parks, and restaurants. So it’s a must-visit destination!

On this day trip, you’ll actually get two destinations in one. The nearby Old Markham Village is equally as charming with a main street featuring old homes that have been converted into local businesses.

Aside from strolling, window-shopping, and dining, there is plenty to see and do between the two districts.

Stop by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, which is said to be a hidden gem tucked away in Unionville. Or the Old Firehall Confectionery — as the name suggests, this shop is located in a former fire hall.

There are a number of nearby parks and trails which are scenic in any season.

Unionville is the perfect day trip on a lovely spring day.

We’ll see you there!
