Being a Canadian passport holder has its perks, both at home and abroad. From visa-free travel to countries around the world to increased job opportunities, there are many things that make Canada’s passport as powerful as it is. And according to the Henley Passport Index for 2022, Canada has risen up the ranks since last year.
In 2021, Canada was tied with Australia in 8th place on the global passport index with a score of 184, which refers to the number of destinations passport-holders can enter without a visa (when there isn’t a non-essential travel advisory in effect.)
This year, Canada has landed in 7th place with a score of 185, along with Australia, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Malta.

Just above Canada are the United States and the United Kingdom in 6th place, plus Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, and Belgium.
The two most powerful passports in the world are Japan and Singapore with an overall score of 192.
By contrast, the weakest passports in the world in countries like Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, grant access to less than 30 countries.

“Passports and visas are among the most important instruments impacting on social inequality worldwide as they determine opportunities for global mobility,” says the Chairman of Henley & Partners.
“Wealthier states need to encourage positive inward migration to help redistribute and rebalance human and material resources worldwide.”
