Ryan Gosling, the lovable Canadian, is rumoured to be playing Ken in an upcoming Barbie movie opposite Margot Robbie in the titular role. The man who has gone from screen crush to heartthrob to one of the biggest stars in Hollywood (while still being a heartthrob), is sure to add a little life and charm to the smooth plastic facade that is the Ken doll.

According to sources for Deadline, Gosling initially passed on the part because of a heavy schedule. But, the timing has since changed and the studio behind the flick (Warner Bros) wanted Gosling so badly he was their ‘only choice’.

Well, yeah, it’s Ryan Gosling…

Even more interesting, the movie will be directed by Greta Gerwig, who is known most recently for directing 2017’s coming-of-age dramedy Ladybird and 2019’s Little Women, based on the classic American book by Louisa May Alcott. Both were major critical and commercial successes, with Ladybird taking in $79M USD against a $10M USD budget, and Little Women earning nearly $220M USD against a $42M USD budget.

Based on Gerwig’s filmography thus far, it’s fair to assume the Barbie movie won’t be as commercial or fluffy as most would imagine.

The Barbie movie, hopefully with Ryan Gosling as Ken, is expected to begin shooting in 2022.
