Canada’s borders to stay shut for at least another month but changes on the way

On Friday Bill Blair, Canada’s Public Safety Minister, announced that the restrictions on international travel, and border restrictions with the US, would continue until at least July 21st. However, he has also noted new measures for certain groups, which is in line with Canada potentially reopening travel in a phased approach. Here’s a quick rundown.

Just over a week ago, Health Minister Patty Hajdu said that Canada’s ‘first step’ would be doing away with most quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated people who are already allowed into the country. Most notably, Canada will likely change the mandatory hotel stays for those arriving by air.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Biden, along with other G7 leaders, discussed the reopening plan but made no firm claims about a timeline or what the first steps might look like. As it stands, Canada seems to be waiting until our vaccination rate rises. According to recent data, Canada has a higher percentage of residents with one dose than America, but lower when it comes to fully vaccinated people.

Luckily, the federal government is planning to unveil the first steps of the plan on Monday, June 21st. Here’s hoping that they’ve got at least the first couple of steps figured out, just for clarity’s sake!
