Canada is removing its COVID travel restrictions & here’s what to know

The Government of Canada is officially removing its COVID-19 travel restrictions starting next month and this includes testing, requirements, and quarantine for anyone coming into the country.

Effective October 1, all travellers coming into Canada will no longer need proof of vaccination or submit their information through the ArriveCAN app, among other measures.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, this development is due to a number of factors like Canada’s high vaccination rates, a drop in hospitalization and death rates, availability and use of vaccine boosters, rapid tests and treatments for the virus and the fact that Canada has “largely passed the peak of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 fuelled wave.”

Here’s what you no longer have to do come October 1 for all travellers:

  • Fill out ArriveCAN app or website
  • Proof of vaccination is not required
  • Pre- or on-arrival testing
  • COVID-19-related quarantine or isolation
  • monitor and report signs or symptoms of COVID-19 upon arriving in Canada.

Transport Canada is also removing existing travel requirements, such as:

  • undergo health checks for travel on air and rail
  • wear masks on planes and trains.

Public Health Agency of Canada states that though mask requirements are being lifted, “all travellers are strongly recommended to wear high quality and well-fitted masks during their journeys.”

Health measures are also being lifted on cruises. Travellers will no longer need pre-board tests, be vaccinated for COVID-19, or use ArriveCAN. There will be a set of guidelines to protect passengers and crew, that will align with the approach used in the United States, according to Public Health.
