Call us biased, but we think Canada definitely pulls through for the holiday season. With top-tier Christmas markets, cocoa, and carolling throughout the country, Canadians definitely have no shortage of options when it comes to celebrating the season. And it looks like Planet Cruise agrees with us.

Germany is widely regarded as the birthplace of many beloved Christmas traditions, so it’s no surprise that the country tops this list. But perhaps surprisingly to some, Canada also secured a spot on the list of the most festive countries in the world, in the #6 spot, no less!

Below is the ordered list of the most festive countries (with the most Christmas markets) around the globe:

  • Germany
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Hungary
  • Poland
  • Finland
  • France

Top Christmas markets

According to Planet Cruise, out of 51 Christmas markets analyzed, 28 take place in one of the two top festive countries listed above: Germany and the U.K. With its own slew of holiday traditions like sipping on mulled wine and watching pantomimes, it’s no wonder that the U.K. earned the #2 spot.

In terms of top-ranking Christmas markets in Canada, Toronto’s iconic Winter Village snagged the #3 spot on the global list, followed by Calgary’s Spruce Meadows Christmas Market at #4.

The Toronto Christmas Market is by far one of the largest, most celebrated holiday events in the country, attracting thousands of visitors every year. The annual market transforms the historic Distillery District into a sea of twinkling lights, schnitzel, and fancy winter-themed drinks.

Likewise, the Spruce Meadows Christmas Market in Calgary rings in the season with festive arts and crafts, a giant Christmas tree, and a market with over 400 vendors. Oh, and over 70 kilometres of holiday lights!

So while Canada might not be the birthplace of many festive traditions, it’s clear that Canadians know just how to get in the holiday spirit every year.
