Canada’s federal minimum wage is increasing & here’s what to know

The Government of Canada has announced that it plans to increase the minimum wage for federal workers starting this April. Here’s what you need to know.

In an effort to “keep pace with inflation”, the Canadian government is increasing the current minimum wage for federal employees from $15.55 to $16.65 an hour starting this April 2023.

“Based on the Consumer Price Index, which rose 6.8% in 2022, the increase will help make life more affordable for the approximately 26,000 Canadian workers who earn less than the current rate,” states the release.

“The cost of living is rising, so we’re making sure that wages keep going up too,” said the Minister of Labour, Seamus O’Regan Jr. “We’re looking after workers, because that’s how you grow the economy and create more prosperity for everyone.”

The federal wage increase comes into effect on April 1, 2023.
