Ladies and gentlemen, turn your phones off and dive into that popcorn, it’s film festival time! The 22nd Calgary International Film Festival presented by ATB Financial returns this month with features, documentaries, and shorts from around the world that every cinephile will love.

From September 23-October 3, 2021, Calgarians will have the chance to check out over 175 films from around the globe either in-person in the theatre or online at home.

Since this iteration of the Calgary International Film Festival will be a hybrid one, certain films will be available to stream and watch in the theatre, while others will be cinema-only. Although CIFF has been running for 22 years now, it’s only the second time a hybrid festival has been necessary (with 2020 being the other one).

As mentioned, the festival will include tons of flicks from every corner of the earth, but there will also be plenty of Albertan and Calgarian talent showcased, whether it’s on-screen or behind the camera.

So, what movies should you check out? Well, there are too many great options to choose from, but some of the highlights with lots of tickets left include The Noise of Engines, an offbeat comedy following the internal investigation of the sex life of a Canadian Customs weapons instructor, Stanleyville, a comedy following a woman who enters a bizarre competition to win an SUV, and One of Ours, a documentary set right here in Calgary following Josian Wilson, who was adopted as a baby in Haiti, raised by an Indigenous family in Calgary, and then experienced racial profiling at a basketball tournament that made national news.

Now, those are just some of the flicks at CIFF with plenty of tickets left, so be sure to check out the website here for the full lineup of movies. And if more than one movie catches your eye, which, let’s be realistic, is bound to happen, you can get handy ticket bundles right here to hit up more than one screening or to bring a group of movie-loving pals.
