Calgary’s hailstorm ranks #1 on Canada’s biggest weather stories of 2020

It’s been a wild year, but you guys already know that. There was (and still is) COVID, celebrity cancellations, and politics, but there were also unreal temperatures and conditions. From coast to coast there were some days where we found ourselves sweating in places we didn’t even know that we could sweat, scrambling and soaking wet from rain or hail (sometimes simultaneously) but what was the most widely talked about weather story in 2020?

Well, Environment Canada has released its list of trending climate topics, and it may or may not surprise you to know that Calgary came out on top (or the bottom depending on how you look at it).

YYC’s unreal spring hail storm rocked the outskirts of the city last June. Cars, houses, gardens, office buildings, and everything in between were seriously damaged.

These egg-sized ice balls not only caused pain – emotionally and physically for those who couldn’t get inside fast enough – but was the fourth most expensive natural disaster in Canadian history.

With a multi-billion-dollar price tag, it’s clear – but bothersome – to see why it was number one this year.

If you’d like to read up on what other weather stories made the list, you can check out the original post on Environment Canada here – but beware. Taking a walk down this particular memory lane is like wearing stilettos on a cobblestone street in February.
