Calgary’s downtown nordic ski loop is back open – here’s what you need to know

It’s back, snowfolk! Calgary’s East Village Nordic Loop has reopened for the winter season, but there are a few things to take note of before hitting the ol’ powder trail! Here’s how to prepare for a day behind a pair of ski poles.

WHAT TO BRING

First things first! This trail is BYOS (bring your own skis), so come clip in-ready, sticks in hand, or with your own pair of snowshoes.

Rentals are not available on the trail, though there are a few places where you can snag some equipment nearby! It’s also incredibly important that you dress for the weather and that you bring a headlamp (if you’re checking it out in the afternoon) as the track is not lit.

WHERE TO GO

Once you’re packed and ready to kick it, Calgarians are asked to enter from one of three walkable, drivable, and bikeable points near the loop.

These include the Fort Calgary parking lot, the entrance on 8 Avenue & 6 Street SE, and the Elbow River Traverse bridge.

TRAIL ETIQUETTE

As this trail is totally free to enjoy, the city of Calgary does ask that everyone be respectful while on the loop.

While it is groomed and maintained during the week, it’s asked that people leave their dogs at home and walking or jogging on the trails to keep them in shape. Instead, those who would like to walk or snowshoe are asked to take the path next to the trail.

Lastly, if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, it’s recommended that you stay home.

Shared seating areas aren’t disinfected between uses and it can get quite busy, so it’s safer for everyone if you remain off the trail until you’re cleared of the virus.

For more information about the East Village Nordic Loop please visit their official website here – otherwise, check it out, have fun and enjoy!
