Calgary just requested to expand city limits in a big way – here’s what we know so far

Calgary is an ever-evolving city and as anyone who has ever experienced growing pains will know all too well – when you get too big for your britches, the only solution is to go up a size. In this case, the booming metropolis is looking to expand outwards once again with the city announcing today that they will be negotiating with Rocky View County to annex a portion of land just east of Shepard.

That’s right folks. YYC could get even bigger in the coming years, in an effort to make way for an intermodal site proposed by Canadian Pacific.

Here, containers will be able to get transported from trucks to trains and vice-versa without creeping in on the land of in-city locals – at least that’s the goal.

This move was approved back in 2007 when a unanimous vote came to head, though it should be noted that it will be a while until we can roll out a bumped-back welcome mat.

For this to go legit, a formal letter of initiation will still have to be sent and approved upon by Alberta’s Land and Property Rights Tribunal and, in addition to this, the minister of municipal affairs and the provincial cabinet will also have to sign a go-ahead.

Of course, we can’t forget the residents (most of which who are farmers) in and around the area.

“The County will ensure that the voices of our residents are heard throughout the process, and remains committed to the best possible outcomes for our residents and businesses,” said Rocky View County Mayor, Don Kochan in a press release.

Unfortunately, for those delighted to hear that the drive from one end of the city is about to get a tad longer, there’s no word on when this will all happen, just that it will.

In the meantime, we’ll keep this one on our radar and let you know when updates arrive.
