Guillermo del Toro’s terrifying Netflix horror series was filmed in Toronto

The buzzworthy series at the top of your Netflix homepage has an unexpected Toronto connection. Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is one of the most buzzworthy new arrivals on the streaming platform, and it was filmed right here in our city.

The eight-episode season is a collection of “visually stunning, spine-tingling” nightmares, according to the description on Netflix.

Del Toro’s anthology series has gotten rave reviews since it was released on October 25th, 2022.

The show has a Rotten Tomatoes Score of 96% based on 46 critic ratings.

According to IMDb, the series was filmed in Toronto and Hamilton between June 2021 and February 2022.

Stars from the show were spotted in the city while it was in production, including Rupert Grint, who paid a visit to Toronto’s beloved Lamanna’s Bakery with his family.

Grint’s episode was actually filmed in Mississauga at the Benares Historic House on Clarkson Road.

Distractify reported that filming also took place at two production studios — Cinespace Film Studios in Etobicoke and Pinewood Toronto Studios.

The outlet said that Spadina Museum appeared in one of the episodes, and The Cinemaholic reports that Strabane United Church in Hamilton was also used in one of the scenes.

It’s no secret that Toronto is a hot spot when it comes to Hollywood film and TV productions and is especially frequented by Guillermo del Toro, in particular.

The director used Toronto as the backdrop for his recent film Nightmare Alley starring Badley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara, and Toni Collette.

Prior to that, del Toro filmed his acclaimed fantasy film The Shape of Water in Toronto as well.

There are some exciting new projects in the works in our city right now and they’ll be gracing our screens in the months to come.
