Step back in time and experience an exciting piece of history at Canada’s First Railway Tunnel – for free. Located just underneath this Ontario city and a short distance away from the waterfront is the Brockville Railway Tunnel. Here’s what to know!

This fun historical experience dates back to 1860 and has been a notable staple in the Brockville community for years. Canada’s first railway tunnel passes half a kilometer from Brockville’s waterfront and right under the City.

It has recently undergone a new and revised dynamic light show which boasts a colourful display of lights along with a new soundtrack.

This tunnel experience takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete depending on how long you take to read the information boards and its architecture.

According to its official site, the light and sound program is 90 minutes in length, so whether you decide to stay or not, it may be a different experience each time.

There is no need to book a time to experience the Brockville Railway Tunnel as it is open every day from 9 AM to 9 PM until October 2023.

Though there are some important things to note. According to the tunnel’s site, the walking surface will be wet and slippery in some sections so make sure to wear proper shoes – sandals are a no since they don’t properly grip.

If you have a bike, skateboard, etc, make sure to “walk your wheels” in order to avoid any injuries. For the full list of rules, click here.

As previously mentioned, this experience is free however they do accept donations in order to maintain the tunnel free for all to enjoy.

Add this to your end-of-summer to-do list!
