Ontario is getting its first new provincial park in 40 years & it’s huge (PHOTOS)

Exciting news for all you nature lovers out there. The Ontario government just announced the grand opening of Bigwind Lake Provincial Park and it’s been a long time coming—over 40 years, to be exact.

Located near Bracebridge, Bigwind Lake Provincial Park will be an all-season gem equipped with everything you need for a daytime or overnight adventure.

It will have electrified campgrounds, backcountry camping, and a plethora of four-season recreational activities like cross-country skiing, canoeing, and hiking.

The park covers nearly 5,000 acres, which is equivalent to 1,967 hectares. That’s more than one and a half times bigger than Arrowhead Provincial Park!

It boasts a diverse ecosystem with five beautiful lakes, vast upland forests, marshes, and meadows.

Bigwind Lake Provincial Park is about to become Ontario’s 116th operating provincial park.

Right now, it falls under the “non-operating” category, which means it offers self-guided recreational opportunities but lacks staff, maintained facilities, and campsites.

However, all that is about to change.

The plan is to make it fully serviced and designed with the modern visitor in mind.

Think sleek visitor centers, electric vehicle charging stations, and electrified campsites.

The design of the new parks will prioritize environmentally friendly elements like low-energy buildings and wildlife-friendly planning.

Oh, and they’ll make sure there are plenty of biking and walking routes for easy access.

Ontario is making major moves in the park game. They’re also eyeing the creation of a new urban provincial park near Uxbridge.
