This historic town in Alberta has a western boardwalk & buildings over 100 years old

Bask in Western charm and imagine life at the frontier. About halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, you’ll find the historic town of Big Valley Alberta and it’s the perfect spot for a day trip!

This charming village is home to about 349 people, beautifully preserved historic buildings, and a working steam train station!

Talk a walk along the Jimmy Jock Boardwalk and pursue an assortment of quirky local businesses in Western-inspired buildings. There’s a fudge factory, a Boardwalk Bistro, and an ice cream shop among other boutiques. You’ll also find the local undertaker and house of ill-repute, but don’t worry, those last two closed down a long time ago!

If you’re a bit of a history buff, here are a few buildings you can find in Big Valley that are over 100 years old.

Railway Station

At the end of Main Street, you’ll find the historic Railway Station, now also a museum. This building was built way back in 1912 and it’s the centrepiece in the village’s history. It still houses a railway office along with an extensive photo and artifact gallery featuring the region’s railway heritage.

Big Valley is a destination of Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions that depart from Stettler. Try to time your visit when one of the big steam engines pulls in. “There is never a shortage of residents or visitors on hand when the train pulls into town, over 70 times during the year.”

St. Edmund’s Church

Situated atop the hill and overlooking the village you’ll see a charming little church. The landmark Anglican church is a provincial heritage site and was built over 100 years ago in 1916. In 1997, an automatic ringing bell was added thanks to a donation. Now the church bell rings out the hour like a grandfather clock, earning it the affectionate nickname of “Big Ben of Big Valley.”

Big Valley Jailhouse

From 1914 until the 40s, this little jailhouse was the spot for rambunctious cowboys, miners, or railroaders to cool their heels. It has since been restored to its former condition – and you can even walk inside it and take pictures.

It might be a small town with a big name, but there’s definitely plenty to see in Big Valley!
