A Hollywood icon, an age-defying badass, and an inspiration to female comedians around the world, Betty White seemed to take on life with the same approach that she took on roles – with humour. Sadly though, the trailblazing legend left us at 99 years young today, as confirmed by management and family.

While none of us on the observant side of fame knew her personally, the immediate outpouring of love and admiration had us seeing her as both a pal and confidant; one that deeply impacted those she grew and worked with over her many many years in the industry.

One particular tribute, however, weighed a little heavier on us Canadians.

A long-time friend suggested ‘ex-boyfriend,’ and fellow funnyman, Ryan Reynolds starred alongside White in the 2009 Romcom The Proposal, and has since shared a wholesome relationship on and off-screen.

Over the years, the two have had many a sweet thing to say about each other – through the most recent, had us in tears.

“The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectations. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough.” He shared on Instagram.

“We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret.”

Betty was truly one of the greats whose ‘DGAF’ attitude will live on through those who have and will continue to watch her TV shows and movies – so while she may not have lived forever in-body (as so many of us thought she might) she’ll transcend time through her work and for that, we hope she was proud.

Rest in peace golden girl – you will be missed.
