From oceans to mountain views, The Great North is world-renowned for its natural beauty, but what do you do when the sun goes down and the trails are a blur? For those who can appreciate a drink, a show or a mixer, our country also has some incredible things to do after dark – but when it comes to the top party city in Canada who reigns supreme?

Financial technology company Square, says that the answer is ever-changing, though – some won’t be shocked to see this year’s champ.

After looking at the millions of in-person transactions in Canada between April 1st and June 30th between 2019 and 2023 in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and Montreal it was made clear.

While Calgary was named the party city of Canada in 2022, Toronto residents spent more money than the Alberta destination this year between 7 pm and 4 am (the hours that Square considered ‘nighttime’ for this particular study.)

From bars, cafes and restaurants in the allotted times, Toronto made up 41% of all transactions made in their chosen cities, as for the others? Here’s what they found:

  1. Toronto (41%)
  2. Calgary (39%)
  3. Vancouver (27%)
  4. Montreal (27%)

Surprised? While some were expecting Toronto to top the list, others may have thought Montreal was the answer.

“I don’t want to question Montreal’s cool and cosmopolitan reputation, but our results show that Montreal’s world-renowned nightlife scene may be statistically overrated,” said Ara Kharazian, Research and Data Lead at Square.
