This Vancouver speakeasy is Canada’s best new bar of 2024

Guess what, Vancouver? The list of the 100 Best Bars in Canada is out for 2024, and while we might not have snagged any of the top 10 spots, our city is home to the best new bar of the year – which just so happens to be a speakeasy inspired by “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling. Yes, we’re talking about Bagheera!

The hidden cocktail lounge is tucked away behind a Chinatown ‘betting shop,’ buzzing with dim lighting, inspired decor, and rare spirits.

The concept bridges Indian and Western traditions together for a unique dining experience, reflective of the colonial era – though there are subtle decor choices that “give the finger to Imperialism,” as Canada’s 100 Best puts it.

Every drink is named after a Kipling work, creating a captivating atmosphere for guests to indulge in tempting libations like The Anvil (rhum agricole, Calvados, red vermouth and spicy cinnamon tincture).

Besides being the ‘best new bar,’ Bagheera is one of three Vancouver bars to make the top #20 in the overall ranking for this year, listed right at #20.

Summer reservations

To celebrate the awards this year, both Bagheera and sister bar Laowai will be offering limited reservations for the first time, despite being speakeasies.

“We realize, especially this summer and with the playoffs, people passing through our neighbourhood want the Bagheera or Laowai experience, but they’re on their way to a concert or an event and can’t risk waiting in a lineup,” says Lewis Hart of Three Kingdoms Hospitality, which owns and operates both venues.

Cocktail hopefuls can make a reservation seven days a week during the summer months between 5 and 9 pm by emailing either bar directly at [reservations@bagheera.bar] and [reservations@laowai.ca].

As always, both locations have walk-in space, so get ready to sip, Vancouver!
