This small Alberta town has an underground mine that you can explore

While you’ll find plenty of action in Alberta while visiting popular destinations like Banff and Jasper, small towns like Bellevue are not to be overlooked.

What to expect when in Bellevue, Alta.

Located within the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, Bellevue was founded in 1905 on the flat land above a deep mine.

According to the Crowsnest Heritage website, it was Elsie Fleutot, the young daughter of a West Canadian Collieries French principal, who gave the town its title after she exclaimed, “Quelle belle vue!” (What a beautiful view!)

With a name like that, it should come as no surprise that since then, the area has become a popular area to hike, bike, and get some fresh air — but there is so much more to do.

One of its main, most beloved attractions is actually underground.

Are you afraid of the dark?

Between May 16, 2025, and October, visitors can check out the Bellevue Mine, a haunting experience where they are encouraged to explore 150 feet below the surface.

When open, this incredible site offers an hour-long tour ($25 per adult), where you’ll walk in the footsteps of hardworking employees who used to call the mine their home away from home.

Interested? Dress warm, toss on a miner’s helmet and lamp, and then travel south with one of their Heritage Interpreters.

There’s no place quite like the small town of Bellevue, Alta.
