What to know about the end of the BC Vaccine Card program

Well, it’s official! On Tuesday, government officials announced the end of the BC Vaccine Card program, and it’s coming sooner than you might think. Alongside a couple of other changes, the program will be gone by this Friday, April 8th. Here’s what to know about it.

Last month, the BC government got rid of a variety of mask mandates in a wide range of settings, and changed capacity restrictions for some activities. But, what was most interesting was the plan to remove the BC Vaccine Card program, which had been in place since last summer.

That was set to happen this Friday, and the government is comfortable with following the original timetable. Starting at 12:01AM on Friday, April 8th, the program will no longer be implemented for “businesses, events and services”. However, it should be noted that individual businesses and event organizers are still allowed to require proof of vaccination for entry.

So, while the province-wide measures are being lifted, you may want to keep some form of proof on your person for the next little while. It would not be fun to show up to a dinner reservation or a local concert and be denied entry. That’s our opinion on it, at least.

Alongside this major change, proof of vaccination will no longer be required for post-secondary student housing. And finally, businesses will no longer need to have their own ‘COVID-19 Safety Plan’. For more information on the changes, head to the BC government website.
