BC just cancelled New Year’s parties & brings back gathering, capacity limits

Well, we’re far from out of the woods. The BC government announced today the cancellation of New Year’s events and parties, new capacity, and gathering limits, among other restrictions. The news comes as the province is dealing with a steady rise in cases of the OMICRON variant.

From Monday, December 20th until the very end of January, these new orders will be in effect across the province. For New Year’s, Dr. Bonnie Henry didn’t hold back, saying “all New Year’s Eve parties will be suspended, no matter their size.” She did, however, say that restaurants will still be able to serve NYE meals, but that more food and liquor amendments would be coming Monday.

As part of the new orders, guests at restaurants won’t be able to mingle with other tables or dance. Hours of operation and liquor sales will remain untouched for the time being.

Also beginning Monday, all indoor gatherings in BC will be limited to one household plus 10 other individuals, or one other household. That means that New Year’s house parties will likely take a beating as social circles get smaller.

Large events of 1,000 people or more will also be limited to 50% capacity, meaning the Canucks winning streak is only going to be viewed by half as many screaming fans.

British Columbia’s news of the restrictions comes on the same day that Ontario reintroduced its own capacity and gathering limits.
