This charming town in Quebec is the birthplace of Cirque du Soleil

This world-renowned performance group that has graced stages in the U.S, Canada, and Europe, just so happens to have been founded in this small yet charming town in Quebec. Baie-Saint-Paul is the perfect fall getaway, with a rich history and delightful downtown core.

Located about six hours eastbound from Ottawa, and about an hour away from Quebec is Baie-Saint-Paul.

This town is known for its artistic side through galleries and overall culture. According to Charlevoix Tourism, art appreciators can embark on an artistic journey through the town through venues, museums, and outdoor installations.

Head to downtown Baie-Saint-Paul to rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It is known for its large concentration of art galleries.

Not only is it a fall paradise, surrounded by gorgeous mountains, a strong culture, and small-town charm, but it is also the birthplace of Cirque Du Soliel.

According to the official performer’s site, a troupe of performers founded by Gilles Ste-Croix hit the streets of Baie-Saint-Paul to show off what they got, back in the 80’s.

“Known to the public as Les Échassiers de Baie-Saint-Paul (The Stiltwalkers of Baie-Saint-Paul), this group would form the core of what would grow into Cirque du Soleil,” states the site.

“This crew had an eclectic show, highlighting jugglers, dancers, fire breathers, and musicians who pleased local fans with their act. Little did these early fans and performers know that these embryonic beginnings would lead to something magical, exciting, and revolutionary on a global scale.”

Head to Citizen’s Square along rue Forget for a look back at its history. Here is where the world-renowned company began its first shows.

A sculpture has stood here since 2009, commemorating its 25th anniversary, according to Charlevoix Tourism.

So if you’re an art fanatic and live for historical stories, Baie-Saint-Paul is the place to be.
