A four-day international art fair is coming to Vancouver this May

If you love contemporary art, this four-day art fair will have plenty of one-of-a-kind pieces to view. Art Vancouver is a celebrated international art fair that brings together talented artists and exhibitors from across Canada and the globe to the Vancouver Convention Centre, and it’s now in its 10th year.

Established as a platform for artistic exchange, the event brings artists, galleries, collectors, curators, and art appreciators together for the ultimate showcase experience.

This year, visitors will find a range of paintings, sculptures, murals, and interdisciplinary work that reflect the diverse lived experiences and cultures of the artists who created them.

Some example artistic themes from this year’s showcase include identity, relocation, material transformation, and contemporary life, according to organizers.

For one, Iraqi–American artist Sousan Alwan works with figurative painting to examine questions of identity, femininity, and resilience.

Opeyemi Matthew Olukotun is another exhibiting artist, bringing his art rooted in portraiture and lived experience between Nigeria and Canada.

Vancouver-based Kelcy Timmons Chan works through mural and pop-inspired visuals to reflect everyday cultural symbols, food, and shared spaces.

Working in sculpture and mixed media, Jorge Izaza’s work explores how natural material, light, and surface interact.

This is all just a snippet of how contemporary artists from different parts of the world are engaging with similar questions of belonging, identity, and material experience.
