The Toronto Zoo has an adorable new baby wombat and you can help name her

Another bundle of joy! The Toronto Zoo has a new, adorable addition to its wombat family, and it needs help picking a name.

On Wednesday, the zoo shared a post on Instagram, introducing the “southern hairy-nosed wombat baby” to the masses.

“We’re thrilled that the newest southern hairy-nosed wombat baby, affectionately known as #TZPouchPotato, has burrowed straight into the hearts of our community,” shared the zoo online. “Now we need your help choosing the perfect name for her!”

How to vote for the new Toronto Zoo wombat

Though we’re sure you have a ton of ideas, the Toronto Zoo, with suggestions and support from the Australian Consulate in Toronto, has narrowed it down to four options.

According to the voting portal, the available names are:

• Nellie
• Melba
• Matilda
• Clover

“Toronto Zoo guests may be lucky enough to catch tiny peeks of #TZPouchPotato in the coming weeks as she gets a little braver and spends more time exploring outside the pouch,” shares the zoo on Instagram. “Full pouch emergence is expected later this fall!”

If it were up to us, we’d probably stick to the potato theme. Mash? Tater? Terry? Tot? We could go on!

You can cast your vote to help name the baby by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. Voting can be done on the official Toronto Zoo page and is limited to one entry per email.
