BC’s newest provincial park has a boardwalk leading to thousand-year-old trees

Ancient Forest Park may be BC’s newest provincial park, but as its name suggests, its stretches of ancient trees are far from young. What’s more, the park protects some of the world’s only temperate rainforest, making it an extraordinary place to add to your summer bucket list.

Located in the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, Ancient Forest Park (Chun T’oh Whudujut) is home to thousand-year-old western redcedars, and a biodiverse array of plants, mosses, lichens, and fungi, according to BC Parks.

There’s a 450-metre-long boardwalk that provides ample opportunity for visitors of all abilities to experience this majestic forest – as it’s universally accessible.

An additional 2.3 km of boardwalk takes visitors to several famed ‘giants,’ including “Big” Tree, Tree Beard, and Radies Tree. Oh, and a stunning cascading waterfall!

Finally, experienced hikers can embark on the Driscoll Ridge Trail, a 15.5 km long loop that brings visitors to the ridge line on the south side of the park, described as “strenuous” by BC Parks.

While overnight camping is not permitted at Ancient Forest Park, it is an option at the nearby Purden Lake Park, located just east of Prince George.

Note that visitors of the park will need to bring their own drinking water, as potable water is not available in the park.

So there you have it, big tree lovers! All that’s left to do is start planning your next road trip.
