Are you curious to know what lies beneath the ground? Uncover and explore the fascinating yet stunning geological site that is the Bonnechere Caves.
Located in Eganville, Ontario – about four hours away from Toronto and an hour from Ottawa are the Bonnechere Caves.
According to Destination Ontario, this stunning geological site is one of the best examples in the world of solution caves. That means that they have been dissolved out of the solid rock by acidic waters.
“Dating back to the Ordovician time period of the Paleozioc era, this fascinating cave system is thought to have been formed between 400 and 500 million years ago from the limestone floor of a vast sea,” shares Destination Ontario.

The Bonnechere Caves have been giving tours to the public for over 55 years.
A man by the name of Tom Woodward first discovered the caves in 1955. Per Destination Ontario, he explored them and drained them, enabling them to be opened up to the public.
They have since become a popular visitor site for tours and operations are run by a small, family-owned business.
There are a few different ways to see the caves, a self-guided softly supervised tour for the explorer and a traditional guided tour for those wanting to know all the details.
On your tour, you’ll learn all about the cave’s history and how they were formed as you walk along the tunnel system.
While there is lighting in the tunnels it’s recommended that you bring a flashlight so you can see all of the details of the cave walls.
Not only that but be sure to bring a sweater because it’s definitely on the cooler side underground.
You can grab your tour tickets from the Bonnechere Caves website and learn more about what to expect.
With that enjoy and happy caving!
