Alberta’s highways to see futuristic semi-trucks fitted with AI technology

If your stomach still does somersaults every time you drive past, behind or in front of an 18-wheeler, just know that you’re not alone and that it won’t be much longer until you can stress a little less Folks, the future is, the future is friendly and it’s about to grant us all a peace of mind.

As part of a pilot project approved by the Government of Canada, Alberta will soon see semi-trucks that have been fitted with a new AI technology Platooning the Queen E II, in hopes of making necessary transport a little safer during the night, when vision is limited, and during the day when roads are often covered in ice and snow.

With newly integrated sensors, cameras, an active braking system and so much more, officials hope that their new driver-assist plugin will increase fuel efficiency and reduce accidents caused by human error.

“Innovation in the commercial transportation industry is being driven by technology,” said Chris Nash, president of the Alberta Motor Transport Association in a press release.“This program is critical to economic growth and competitiveness and improves safety and efficiency across the supply chain.”

According to AMTA who will oversee the project, this technology is totally safe and has been tested so there’s no need to worry and man, do we hope that they’re right about that because it won’t be long until they hit the road!

As funded by Transport Canada, in cooperation with Bison Transport, Pronto, the University of Alberta, Solaris Fatigue Management, Tantus and with support from Alberta’s government, the Cooperative Truck Platooning System project will run from March 1st, 2022 to June 2022 – just under a year from now.
