Front line workers have really given us everything they’ve got. From working insane hours, to literally putting their lives on the line, they’ve gone above and beyond over the last year. If we could, we’d throw them a parade and a city-wide party, but that would be counterproductive. Instead, we’re letting you guys know about Alberta’s new Critical worker benefit.

During a recent press conference, Premier Jason Kenney, in partnership with the Government of Canada, announced that 380,000 health care, education, social services, and private-sector workers will receive $1,200 as their way of saying “thank you.”

If you or someone you know is a respiratory therapist, a nurse, food service, housekeeping or maintenance worker, a family, and youth counsellor, teacher’s assistant, or bus driver (among others), you or them might just be eligible!

In order to receive the critical worker benefit, employees must have had to work at least 300 hours from October 20th, 2020 to January 31st, 2021, reside in Alberta; and for those who work in a private sector, make $25 or less an hour.

For more information visit the Government of Alberta website here and don’t forget to let your employers know! Instead of workers having to apply individually, it’ll actually be your boss’s job to submit and distribute the money to their staff. They’ll have between February 17th and March 19th to do so which isn’t a whole lot of time, so get them on it. You deserve it!
