Ski season is far from over! Here’s what to expect in Alberta as we head into April

The sun is shining and your shovels are stowed away, but you may want to reconsider your immediate plans.

If you’re among the many who haven’t had a chance to hit a ski hill, go for a toboggan ride, or are hoping to build a snowman before the season’s end, you’re in luck because Mother Nature is about to deliver!

Mid-March is here and Wild Rose Country is torn. Some want spring flowers, but others don’t want winter to end. To those people, we say, “Get ready!”

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Alberta is about to see a lot more snow but you won’t want to hesitate to enjoy the coming weeks.

“From the week of the 18th to the 25th of March we have a very clear depiction of colder-than-normal conditions in Northern Manitoba, Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Alberta,” Natalie Hasell, a Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with ECCC told Curiocity.

“This is associated with a low-pressure system frontal structure that is making its way down and will impact Edmonton and Calgary. We’ll see very warm conditions in a lot of Alberta today, but really switching to cold temperatures as early as tomorrow.”

Accompanied by approximately 20 centimetres of snow in southern Alberta, anyone looking to hit Banff’s Sunshine Village, Lake Louise or a local park with a sled-friendly slope will be able to slide into the upcoming month on some fresh powder.

As for April? It could be a mixed bag with warmer temperatures and maybe, even more precipitation – though it’s too early to know for sure.

“Continue to expect variability… I wouldn’t get rid of snow tires just yet,” Hasell told us.

“There are some parts of Alberta that can get snow any time of year. Southern Alberta certainly has seen snow in the past well into May”

So there you have it! The next couple of weeks will bring more frosty fun to Alberta Ski Hills and your front yard – but you’ll have to act fast.

Enjoy!
