Wild Rose Country really has it all. From the drama in Alberta’s Badlands to snow-covered mountains, there’s plenty to see and experience, one of the most impressive being the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden.
A tranquil destination in Lethbridge, Alberta, Nikka Yuko was built as a way to thank the Japanese community for contributing so much to the area.
Established in 1967, the garden got its name from the Japanese words Ni from Nihon (meaning Japan), ka from Kanada or Canada, Yuko, which means “friendship” and celebrates the relationship between the two countries.
“Nikka Yuko expresses the merging of Japanese and Canadian cultures in a garden rich in symbolism. It captures the signature of the southern Alberta landscape while simultaneously integrating traditional Japanese philosophy and symbols,” they explain on their website.
“Each element of the Garden has been carefully chosen and maintained to bind the entire Garden together in perfect harmony.”
These elements include a waterfall, stream, reflective pond, a meadow, meticulously pruned trees and shrubs, spring flowers, stone lanterns and a teahouse.
Want to visit? You may have to wait until May 11th, 2024, but you’ll be in good company!
Former Princess, Ayako of Takamado, visited the garden in 2017 as part of their big 50th anniversary celebration.
While there, the public is also encouraged to attend one of their many events and daily activities including guided meditation, happy hours, tai chi classes.
Heck, maybe we’ll see you out there. It’s going to be a good season!
