Alberta just changed how vaccine passports work at ski hills & holiday markets – here’s what to know

With a nip in the air and snow on the ground, market and ski season are here, and naturally, people have some questions about how Alberta’s restriction exemption program will be implemented on the hills and at the various trade shows around the province. As detailed by the government in a statement this week, here’s everything you need to know before gearing up or heading out this winter.

SKI HILLS

According to a recent press release, starting Monday, November 29th, ski hills will be able to operate outdoor activities without implementing the Restrictions Exemption Program  – if they choose to. This means that when accessing the hill, guests will no longer have to show their vaccine passports (depending on the hill) and instead can require people to social distance in places like chairlifts and gondolas. Masking, however, will still be required indoors.

HOLIDAY MARKETS

Alternatively, starting on Monday paid entry markets and trade shows (craft fairs, etc.) will actually be able to opt in to REP if they choose to; so if you already have tickets to an event or were planning to do some shopping, check their Instagram page, website or call before checking them out so you can be prepared.

“These changes maintain the intent of the REP – to keep Albertans safe – while reflecting what we’ve heard for businesses and venues to operate effectively. We continue to follow the evidence and update the guidance so the program can reduce the spread of COVID-19 in ways that make sense for Albertans,” said Jason Copping, Minister of Health

As a reminder – when attending an event that has implemented Alberta’s restriction exemption program, those aged 12 and up will be required to provide one of the following at the door:

• A piece of government-issued identification (if guest is 18+) and your proof of vaccination with QR code unless you have an out-of-country, First Nations or Canadian Armed Forces vaccine record (only valid if fully vaccinated)
• A negative privately paid COVID-19 test (done within 72 hours of the event)
• Valid proof of medical exemption
