This January has been surprisingly mild – but winter 2023 isn’t done with us yet! Over the next few days and then well into February, Alberta should prepare for snow, wind and cold unlike what we’ve seen so far this year.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the province will see a significant drop in temperatures this weekend, so plan accordingly if you were hoping to get some fresh air!

“We have a polar front that’s making its way down and as that passes through, we’re going to get some snowfall,” Janelle Gergely, a meteorologist with ECCC told Curiocity.

Luckily, major cities like Calgary and Edmonton will only see around 2 centimetres on Friday, though she warns that it will be icy due to the cold flash.

As for the rest of the upcoming month? We’d recommend bundling up!

“For the long-range, much of Alberta will be below normal for the week of January 30th to the 6th,” Gergely explained.

“The following week does look like it warms up a little bit, but temperatures will still be below normal.”

Sadly, it won’t be until the third week that we’ll see a return to normal, which for February is -2 in Calgary and -6 in Edmonton, so prepare yourselves, Alberta!

“It’s not record-breaking, but it is a return to winter and a return to the cold after such a really lovely January.”

As always, the Alberta weather forecast can change and likely will – so keep checking back and please, stay warm out there, friends!

It’ll be spring before you know it.
