This majestic waterfall in Ontario flows along a 2.6 billion-year-old rock face

While we may not be known for mountains here in Ontario, we do have some pretty gorgeous hiking trails and waterfalls! One of those waterfalls is Aguasabon Falls and Gorge. Located just west of Terrace Bay, this special spot boasts a 100-foot waterfall and a gorgeous boardwalk leading you there. Time to start planning your next spring adventure.

Getting to Aguasabon Falls and Gorge

If you’re driving to the falls from Toronto or the GTA, you’ll have to buckle in for a bit of a road trip!

Aguasabon Falls and Gorge take around 12 hours to get to by car but once you arrive, you’ll be glad you made the journey. The outdoor attraction has a parking lot, open to the public.

The history and exploring

One of the coolest facts about these falls is that the gorge in which the cascade flows is a 2.6 billion-year-old rock face. Yep, you’ll be surrounded by pieces of ancient history as you take in the sights.

Once you’ve parked, just follow the boardwalk from the lot, this will take you right to the viewing platform.

The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible and there are washrooms on site, too.

According to Terrace Bay’s tourism page, “The Aguasabon Falls came to life in the late 1940s, through the Aguasabon Hydro Development that created a source of hydro-electric power to breathe life into the soon-to-be Township of Terrace Bay and the local pulp mill.”

The story goes on to say that the project established a dam at the north end of Long Lake to “redirect water southward and away from Hudson Bay, where the water traditionally flowed.” The reason this was all done was to make sure there was a large enough supply of water available for the Aguasabon Generating Station.

The more you know! Start adding to that spring and summer bucket list, Ontario!
