It appears as though Amy Adams isn’t the only person interested in the life of trees. In the penultimate episode of the second season, the UBC forestry professor Dr. Suzanne Simard got a shoutout for her groundbreaking work. And, of course, the reference had to come from Coach Beard.
For a little reference, Dr. Simard recently released a book titled Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest. Basically, her research has shown that trees do, in fact, communicate on some level, sharing resources and organizing into forest-wide communities.

Naturally, Coach Beard found a way to turn this research into a little coaching wisdom. During a conversation with Nate (another assistant coach), Beard points out that it was once thought that trees compete with one another for sunlight. However, thanks in large part to Dr. Simard’s research, it turns out that they’re more likely to share the light, ensuring the development of all.
