A major portion of Highway 1 has reopened in the Fraser Valley

Good news folks! Following days of hard work, BC has been able to reopen a stretch of Highway 1 between Abbotsford and Chilliwack in the Fraser Valley. However, it’s not going to be smooth sailing anytime soon. Here’s what to know about it.

Damaged during the recent BC storms, the 20km or so stretch of Highway 1 started near the centre of Abbotsford and all the way to the western edge of Chilliwack. This major route through the Fraser Valley is heavily trafficked for both commercial and personal travel, so getting it back was a top priority for the province.

And as of this afternoon, that’s exactly what happened! While the highway is now open in both directions (and without restrictions), BC Transportation is asking that those who travel through it only do so for essential purposes. So, it may come to pass that this stretch joins other restricted roads in BC, but at the moment, that’s not the case.

Regardless, anyone looking to travel on BC highways in the near future should consult the DriveBC website for up to date information on road conditions. And, if you’re curious which roads specifically are off-limits, you can check out current restrictions right here.

Stay safe out there, folks!
