Woah, talk about resilience in the backcountry. Yesterday, it was announced that a BC hiker who went missing earlier this month was found, luckily, by a wildfire helicopter. We think we could barely survive 2 days out there, let alone 2 weeks. Here’s the story so far.
The hiker, a man by the name of Daniel Ring, originally went missing on July 9th, after failing to return from a 2-day hike out to Rampart Ponds. The backcountry campsite is located some 22 kilometres away from the trailhead, and around 10 kilometres from the nearest shelter. So yeah, it’s a pretty remote part of Garibaldi Provincial Park.

The original rescue efforts included members of the Squamish Search and Rescue team as well as over 100 volunteers. But, even with that many hands on deck, finding him in the sprawling backcountry proved to be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Luckily, this story does have a happy ending! On Thursday of this week, a Coastal Fire helicopter team, responding to a nearby fire, spotted Ring and was able to rescue him. According to the RCMP, Ring is now back safe and sound with his family.
