Team Canada is on fire at the Tokyo Games, especially 21-year-old Penny Oleksiak, who is now officially Canada’s most decorated summer Olympian of all time! Oleksiak took home bronze at the 200m womens’ freestyle, the sixth Olympic medal of her career.
The young athlete hails from Toronto and despite her new record, Oleksiak says her career is just getting started. “I just love the Olympics. I think they’re so fun and I think knowing the whole world is watching is super crazy,” she said to CBC. “I’m not done yet so I hope there’s more coming.”
Oleksiak’s medal is the fourth claimed by Canadian athletes at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre so far and the ninth one overall at this year’s games. Canada now has two gold medals, three silver, and four bronze, every single one of them won by female athletes!

Canadians are flooding social media to give Oleksiak her well-deserved props, the Prime Minister included! “Wow – historic news from the pool in [Tokyo 2020],” he tweeted on Tuesday night. “A huge congratulations to [Penny Oleksiak]!”
She may be an Olympic all-star at age 21, but one look at Oleksiak’s Instagram will tell you that she’s just like any other Torontonian, going to Baro with friends and chilling in Riverdale Park.
The young swimmer says that she loves the thrill of the sport and is grateful for every victory. “I’m just competitive. I love pressure I guess. I know when it counts I’m able to show up for it. Bronze medal. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she said to CBC.
As for the other Team Canada medalists, Oleksiak is in great company. Maude Cherron from Quebec has won the gold medal for weightlifting, and Margaret Mac Neil took home first place at the 100m butterfly race. You can see the full list of Canadian Tokyo 2020 medalists here!
