Do you have a new pet in your life? Or maybe you’re looking to see if your pet’s name made the list of top fidos and felines in the country. You came to the right place.

Rover recently released a survey analyzing trending pet names across Canada. The results are surprising, wacky and wonderful, and we’ll break it all down right here.

What we decide to call our pets is deeply personal — some lean towards funny names, and others towards ones that honour the natural world around them. In Canada, we’ve got some pretty interesting ideas about what to call our cats and dogs.

It’s no secret that our furry friends are beloved amongst Canadians, and this list highlights the variety of names that can trend amongst the provinces.

Digging into the data

The data was compiled by Rover, a dog boarding, sitter and walking app that pairs you with animal lovers in your area. The company analyzed all of the new pets added to its database, looking specifically at puppies and kittens under two years old from August 2024 to September 2025.

The results were fascinating, allowing Rover to identify overarching themes and see what kind of inspiration abounds in Canada.

The top five trending male puppy names included Cedar, Rio, Chester, Goose, and Sully. The top five trending female puppy names were Eevee, Charlotte, Clover, Maisie, and Holly. Top trending names for cats included Eddie, Tony, Nimbus, Kiwi, and Cheeto for male kittens, and Marshmallow, Bailey, Charlie, Louise, and Skye for female kittens.

Trends across provinces

When you zoom out to include all the provinces, things get really interesting. There’s some variation between them, including different patterns and themes that are unique to pets from the coasts of British Columbia to the moors of Newfoundland.

These were the top trending puppy and kitten names by province:

  • Alberta – Gemma (dog); Aries (cat)
  • British Columbia – Pickle (dog); Bailey (cat)
  • Manitoba – Louie (dog); Penny (cat)
  • New Brunswick – Oliver (dog); Luna (cat)
  • Newfoundland & Labrador – Pickles (dog); Dottie (cat)
  • Nova Scotia – Aspen (dog); Archie (cat)
  • Ontario – Elsie (dog); Baby (cat)
  • Prince Edward Island – Lily (dog); Luna (cat)
  • Quebec – Maverick (dog); Raven (cat)
  • Saskatchewan – Bailey (dog); Kiwi (cat)

Overall, Rover identified some key themes. We tend to like to honour our grandparents and respect our elders through pet names like Louise, Dottie, and Archie. Canadians are also keen on naming pets after what Rover calls “adventurous characters,” including Samwise, Aslan, and Totoro. We also seem to have an obsession with natural wonders, giving our pets names like Dawn, Douglas Fir, and Cedar across the country. Food-inspired names, sports stars and names with Canadian roots also score big. Pet parents have also recently turned to Indigenous names for inspiration, including Muskwa (bear), Nimkii (thunder), and Nodin (wind), which speak to the great outdoors.

Altogether, there are some pretty interesting observations on this list of pet names. You can browse through the top names in Canada, and even the top ones globally.

If you’ve been looking to name that new furry friend in your life, here’s your chance! You can take inspiration from your fellow Canadians with this handy list.
