From coast to coast, there is no shortage of enchanting places to visit in the chilly months and in Alberta, Cold Lake is one of ’em!

Located northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, this charming city is beloved by locals for its small-town feel and popular beach in the summertime, but it’s a wonder in the winter.

An all-season beauty

You’ve likely been to Cold Lake when it’s hot and sunny, but have you seen it covered in ice?

While there is no sand, the sun still shines most days, and there’s still plenty to experience.

One fantastical event? The Santa Claus Parade, which takes place on November 29th, 2024.

Featuring the big man himself, this parade gives businesses, residents and non-profit organizations a chance to get their names out there and celebrate the season.

Featuring colourful floats, dancing, and music, those in the area will have a great time whether in it or watching it happen—but the fun doesn’t stop when the engines do.

“Once Santa has made his way through downtown, follow him all the way to the Cold Lake Energy Centre for our Kick Off to Christmas Party,” they explain on their website.

“Bring your camera and get a quick photo with Santa before you enjoy all the fun activities. There will be sparkle tattoos, a station to write your letter to Santa, and other fun and games.”

The very best part? This event is free of charge and open to everyone, so check it out… and stay a while, because this winter, the city will be buzzing.

What else to do in Cold Lake

Not only will it look beautiful under the snow, but there will be several outdoor skating rinks, and another festival come February that’ll be fun for the whole family.

Snow Fever is described as a three-day event over the Family Day Weekend and you won’t want to miss this!

During this festive affair, guests will get to enjoy a live DJ, Nordic-themed food, tubing, night skiing, and a chilly beer garden hosted by Cold Lake Brewing and Distilling.

Have kids or just want to relive your childhood? Check out the ice slides and sleigh rides, or take part in snow painting, axe throwing, and indoor activities.

If, of course, you’d like to go somewhere to escape the cold, there are also several shops, restaurants, cafés, and hotels where you can get a good night’s sleep.

It’s a beautiful place, no matter the time of year, so check it out and bundle up!
