Spooky season is in full force! Toronto may be a lively city but did you know there are spots that are considered to have a haunting past? The Haunted Walk is Canada’s most popular ghost tour company, offering ghost tours and paranormal adventures in a handful of cities including Toronto.

The walking tours allow guests to see the city’s darker history, as guides share spine-tingling ghost stories, unsolved mysteries, and historical events! The Haunted Walk Toronto spoke with Curiocity and gave us the low down on the most haunted spots in Toronto.

The Distillery Historic District

According to The Haunted Walk, the Distillery Historic District is hard to beat when it comes to haunted neighbourhoods because of the sheer number of ghosts that are said to still roam the area.

“Ghostly employees return from beyond the grave to work a shift that never ends, the original founder checks up on current staff, and a notorious poltergeist lurks about—not to give too much away. The Distillery District certainly has more than its fair share of spirits,” shares The Haunted Walk.

The Village at Black Creek

If you want your best chance at seeing something from beyond the grave yourself, the Village at Black Creek (formerly Black Creek Pioneer Village) is said to be the “most active”.

“During the day, the costumed interpreters provide a fun and cheerful experience. But after dark, when the lights go off and the staff head home, it becomes an entirely different place,” says The Haunted Walk.

“Guests and tour guides on our ghost tours and Alone in the Dark experiences have reported hearing footsteps climbing empty stairwells, seeing shadowy figures inside vacant buildings, and even disembodied voices calling out in the night.”

Talk about spooky!

Apparently, paranormal activity at the site has become so common that The Haunted Walk staff doesn’t even bother reporting it most times.

Elgin & Winter Garden Theatres

If you’re looking for a good ghost story to tell your friends – this is it.

This story is featured on The Haunted Walk’s Original Haunted Walk of Toronto and tells the tale of the Lavender Lady from the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres.

“She’s such a well-known ghost that she even has her own stamp!” shares The Haunted Walk.

“In 2016, Canada Post released a collection of ten stamps featuring Canadian ghosts, and the Lavender Lady proudly represented Toronto. The Lavender Lady is believed to be the spirit of a woman who was stabbed in the restrooms of the Winter Garden. Legend has it that she dragged herself to the elevators to call for help, but tragically died before it could arrive.”

The story goes on to mention that the woman is often seen in the centre box of the Winter Garden and earned her name from the “unmistakable scent of lavender that accompanies her presence.”

Staff at the theatres have reported that the building’s original elevators, which still require an operator to move between floors, will “mysteriously stop on the same level as the infamous restroom without anyone pressing the call button”.

Well, we’re officially spooked!
